Travel Essentials: What you need to know before traveling
Travel—there is a strange sweetness hidden in this word. When the dust of the city, the pressure of work, or the fatigue of a monotonous life plagues the body and mind, the desire to go somewhere revives. But traveling is not successful just by buying a ticket and packing a bag. There are some things that are called Travel Essentials — meaning essential travel items, preparation, and mental preparation.
In today’s article, I will share some of my experiences, tips, and those small things that make traveling more comfortable and hassle-free.
1. The art of bag packing: light but necessary
Many people think that more things mean better preparation. But traveling teaches one thing—”Take less, but take what is necessary.”
I once went to Cox’s Bazar with friends. On the first day, I realized that half of the five shirts and three pairs of shoes I took in my bag were unnecessary. Instead, you need a pair of comfortable sandals, a light raincoat, and a power bank.
Tips for packing well:
- Rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space.
- Pack liquids (shampoo, lotion) in small bottles.
- Always keep a first aid kit — bandages, medicine, pain relief, etc.
- Keep travel documents (ID, tickets, hotel bookings) in a separate file.
2. Use of technology: Makes travel easier
In this era, mobile phones are not just a means of communication, but also a travel planning companion.
Personally, I never go anywhere without a few apps — such as Google Maps, Booking.com, Uber/Bolt, and Currency Converter.
Travel Essential Apps that help:
- Google Maps: Saves your life if you get lost!
- TripIt or Wanderlog: Keeps your entire travel plan in one place.
- Translator App: Solves language problems when you go abroad.
- XE Currency: Great for keeping track of money.
But remember one thing — download all the apps in advance for offline use. Because, it is not easy to get network in many places.
3. Clothing and comfort: Prepare according to the place
Making a mistake in choosing clothes while traveling can often ruin the fun.
For example, if you go to Jaflong in Sylhet during the monsoon, you need waterproof shoes and a light jacket, and if you go to the mountains of Bandarban, you need hiking boots and sportswear.
List of clothing according to need:
- For sea travel: cotton clothes, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen.
- For hilly areas: trekking shoes, light sweater, waterproof bag.
- For urban travel: comfortable shoes, less luggage, power bank.
Always choose clothes that are comfortable and dry quickly.
4. Health and Safety: Take Care of Yourself
Once, I got a stomach ache after eating roadside food in Rangamati. That’s when I realized that no matter how exciting the trip is, there is no joy if you are not in good health.
Travel health tips:
- Drink bottled water.
- Carry your necessary medicines with you.
- Think before eating unfamiliar food.
- Light salt water is very beneficial for those who suffer from motion sickness.
And speaking of safety — always share your travel plans with someone. Don’t trust strangers in new places too easily.
5. Hold on to memories — but see with your eyes
The joy of traveling is not only in the camera, but also in remembering. Many times, we are so busy taking pictures that the beauty of nature is not seen with our eyes.
Once, I saw a sunset at Kaptai Lake — I wanted to take the camera, but after hearing my friend’s words, I put it down. That scene still comes to mind when I close my eyes.
So remember,
“Pictures hold memories, but feelings are only remembered by the eyes.”
6. Plan, but be spontaneous
Many people say that travel means — ‘planned vacation’. But sometimes let travel be a little unplanned.
I once went to visit the Sundarbans just for an afternoon. There was no big plan. Yet it was one of the best experiences of my life.
But yes, you must decide some basic things in advance:
- Budget and schedule
- Place to stay
- Transportation
- Emergency contact numbers
Give life a chance to surprise you in the rest of the time.
7. Respect for local culture and people
Travel is not only your own pleasure, but also an opportunity to touch the lives of others.
When you go to a hilly region, try to understand the lifestyle of the people there. Don’t think of their language, clothing, or food as ‘strange’ — instead, try to get to know them.
Once, I was the guest of a Marma family in Bandarban. They offered me tea, told me stories — then I realized that travel is actually a beautiful way to connect.
8. Sustainable Travel
The most important thing in today’s world is responsible travel.
We must remember not to harm nature while enjoying it.
- Reduce plastic use.
- Do not litter in nature.
- Do not disturb animals.
A simple act — if you carry your own water bottle, you can save many plastic bottles on one trip!
Last thing: Travel is about finding yourself
The real purpose of travel is not just to see places — to see yourself in a new way.
Mountains, sea, forest, city — there is something to learn in every place.
Sometimes patience, sometimes courage, sometimes gratitude.
So don’t just pack your bags before traveling, prepare your mind too.
Because, the biggest Travel Essentials are — an open mind and a cheerful attitude.
